Once upon a time Science Fiction and Fantasy was considered a fringe genre in movies, but that is certainly not the case anymore. Today some of the most popular movies in mainstream cinema are fantasy and Sci Fi and some of the next year’s upcoming Sci Fi movies are the most anticipated.
It was TV shows like Star Trek and films like Star Wars that started the revolution, and the success of Sci Fi is no more evident than in recent times where movies like District 9 and Avatar were nominated for Best Picture. Avatar of course won, and is the most successful movie at the Box Office ever.
Not all of these movies are about aliens and space travel though, many are about the future here on Earth, and the genre has expanded a great deal in the past half-century. Over the next few months a few upcoming Sci Fi movies will try and follow in their footsteps, and these are some of those to keep an eye out for.
Late this year Hugh Jackman stars as a boxing promoter in the future, but the difference is that robots now do the fighting, in Real Steel. He finds a robot who he believes could become a great fighter, and the movie is the story of their rise to the top. It is also stars Evangeline Lilly of Lost-fame and is directed by Shawn Levy, better known for comedies like Big Fat Liar and the Night at the Museum movies.
Perhaps the most anticipated Sci Fi movies of 2012 is the The Hunger Games, based on the novel by Suzanne Collins. It is one of the upcoming Sci Fi movies that is causing quite a stir, as the books have garnered a huge following. If it is successful you can expect to see Catching Fire and Mockingjay, the second and third part in this trilogy revolving around Katniss, a young girl in the land that once was the USA.
It is directed by Gary Ross, who last directed Seabiscuit, and has an all star cast of both established actors like Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland, and rising stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hensworth and Josh Hutcherson
The story revolves around a 16 year old girl, Katniss, who lives in the Panem district in the remains of what was once the United States. When her sister is randomly chosen to appear in the televised ‘The Hunger Games’ event, Katniss takes her place. This event is all about one thing – kill or be killed.
