You should know up front — there is no “average” work week!

The nature of working in the voice over industry is that work will come and go in waves. One thing you can do to make sure you always have work, despite the slow seasons, is to stay productive and to continue networking.

Networking is one aspect of your work week that should be constant, no matter how busy or bored you are. Reaching out to potential contacts and staying in touch with producers and clients is the only way to ensure your plate will be full when big holiday opportunities come along.

How far in advance do you prepare for holiday work? Try to always be three months ahead of all major events and holidays. That means that you should now be contacting clients for the Christmas season. By the beginning of November, you should be thinking ahead to Valentine’s Day.

If you are realizing that you passed up the opportunity to get more voiceover work for the winter holidays, go ahead and start contacting clients for the next major wave of holidays. Be the first to get your foot in the door! Also be sure to keep an eye on events that might change from one year to the next, such as Sweeps.

Once you get the feel for the yearly work flow, you can make sure to stay organized so that you are not caught off guard when you hit a slow season. While these coming months are a busy time for you, know that January and February will be relatively slower times. Planning ahead for the slow season will keep your voiceover business on track, both financially and marketing-wise.

Preparing for a light load of national commercial spots does not necessarily mean you will not be working much. Take advantage of the down time by concentrating on networking within your local community. Local companies do not need to plan ahead three months in advance. Balancing your efforts and planning ahead is how you will stay as busy as you want to be!
