Robert De Niro has become the symbol of how to play a gangster or unscrupulous person convincingly. So much so that the audience is left in no doubt his character is as menacing and dangerous as portrayed. In cinemas around the world he has had people sitting on the edge of their seats wondering what the character would do next. People of all ages and genders are totally enthralled with his characters and greatly admire his art.
Even when playing a hood in a comedy such as ‘Analyze This’ he was the epitome of a bad guy, neurosis and all. Maybe a reason why he experienced such towering success as an actor is the fact that his ancestry is a combination of some of the most volatile cultures known to man. The explosive nature and hot Italian passion combined with Irish charm mixed with dour German humor and stiff upper lip English behavior promises to be interesting if nothing else.
He was born to parents who were both artists in their own right and known for their paintings, sculpting and poetry writing. As early as the age of 10 he had his sights set on an acting career after playing the Cowardly Lion in a school play of The Wizard of Oz. Essentially shy he found that when acting he forgot about everything around him and concentrated only on his acting.
His career was launched with roles in Mean Streets and Bang the Drum Softly. Since then he has appeared in a variety of block buster movies and received numerous accolades. His first Oscar was for Best Supporting Actor as the young Corleone in the second Godfather movie for which he also received a Bafta nomination as Best Newcomer. For Taxi Driver he received his first Best Actor Oscar Award. These roles and awards firmly entrenched De Niro as a first class actor with a special knack to play intimidating bad guys with chilling authenticity.
His versatility is another strong point. He has an almost chameleon like ability to change from a seriously bad guy to a hysterically funny character with ease. De Niro plays both of these arch types to perfection to the delight of his adoring audience.
A third strength is his unwavering belief and confidence in his acting abilities which made him break out of the type casting mold of gangsters and tough guys and take one roles which were the extreme opposite.
With A Bronx Tale and The Good Shepherd he tried his hand at directing with success. He played in both these movies and his performance on either side of the camera showed that he was a master both these art forms.
The epitome of everything a person expects of an actor at the top of his career Robert De Niro continues to grow with each new venture. Bringing realism to his roles is something he strives. Needing to be heavier and able to box for his Raging Bull character he put on weight and learnt to box. To be a convincing taxi driver for the film of that name he spent weeks driving a cab. So too for his part in New York, New York he learnt to play the Saxophone to ensure a convincing portrayal. He is a consummate actor totally committed to each role.
