A great comedy can raise the spirits. Even the most mentally weary or physically exhausted person can find that they may be lifted up by a good comedy. The best comedies of course live on in our memories long after they have disappeared from our movie theaters. Many people watch their favorite comedy films over and over again to the extent that they may unconsciously have much of the narrative committed to memory.
Tastes differ but certain comedies stand out and rise up above the mainstream. Through skillful dubbing into different languages, it is possible for really great comedy performances to be seen by audiences all over the world.
Many movies are aimed at particular sectors of society and as such have limited appeal. But it seems that great humor can be a universal language. The really best comedies tend to cross over age, gender and/or cultural barriers and often are enjoyed by diverse international audiences. This trend is particularly true of animations. The runaway success of recent comedy hits such as the Shrek and Madagascar movies demonstrate this perfectly.
Enormously popular and appealing was the great comic actor Peter Sellers. Few will forget the amazing humor in The Party, a film in which he plays the role of fledgling Indian actor who acts the part of a soldier. His attempts to play the bugle, which he does at all the wrong times, were riotously funny. It continues with him setting off an explosion and mistakenly destroying, a castle to be used later in the filming. The film is filled with similar scenes. The automatic toilet role that wont stop is another which displays Sellers comic brilliance and caused the viewer to be constantly doubled up with laughter.
Right up there with the most acclaimed comedy productions has to be Monty Python and the Holy Grail. This film loosely follows the twelfth century story of King Arthur and how he goes about recruiting the Knights of the Round Table. Already having a devoted television audience, with Holy Grail Monty Python raised the bar for comedy films to a new level.
As mentioned determining how great a comedy is remains a personal choice and lists of favorites will differ markedly. For some it may be Zoolander or Office Space. Others may list My Big Fat Greek Wedding or The 40 Year Old Virgin as their all time greats.
Luckily there is no ultimate best list that has to apply to everyone, but there will always be those special and personal best comedies that attract us. In addition to being great fun to watch the result may be beneficial to our mood and physical well being.
